Joe Throckmorton
Waynesburg Wrestling |
Joe, a 2-time WPIAL Champion and 1980 State Champ who went on to wrestle
at Pitt, became an assistant coach in 1991 and took over head coach of
the Raiders in 2008. He has coached a total of 19 WPIAL Champs and 7
State Champs. Joe was inducted Friday into the PA Sports Hall of Fame! |

Ben Bumgarner

Ben has had an historic senior year to be sure! At the State Track &
Field Meet on Saturday, Ben won the State Title in the 3,200 run with a
school record time, making
him a State Champion in two different sports as a senior. Our
Student Athlete of the Year also won a state title in Cross County in
the fall. |

Arnold Wilson

A three-sport athlete at West Greene, Arnold was a standout athlete in
Football, Basketball, and Track & Field. As a senior in 1972, Arnold
finished fourth in the state in the 100-yard dash! |

Our last feature was the 1968 Waynesburg Baseball team. Now we

The 1968 Raiders took a 19-0-1 overall record into the WPIAL
Championship Game after they defeated Kiski, 3-0 with a 2-hitter thrown
by Jeff Cree in the Semifinals at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. The
Raiders fell short in the Championship Game to Ellwood City. |

Corbin Semple

As we have concluded another PIAA State Wrestling tournament in Hershey,
we recognize another one of Waynesburg's 31 state titles! Corbin Semple
added his name to that illustrious list during his senior year when he
won the 2005 State Title at 171-pounds! |

John Higgins

Waynesburg wrestling has a rich history of Individual State Champions
with a total of 31 titles dating back to 1939. Almost half of those were
won prior to 1953. In 1952, John won title number 15 for the Raiders,
winning the state title at heavyweight (185 lbs) his senior year. |

2016-2017
West Greene Girls Basketball |
Continuing to make history seemingly with each win, the West Greene
Girls Basketball team made more history last week. The Pioneers defeated
Rochester in the WPIAL Quarterfinals, 51-37. The win clinched the
program's first ever WPIAL Semifinal berth and first ever berth in the
State Playoffs. |

Sam Minor
Mapletown Wrestling |
Voted the best wrestler in Greene County in 1955, Sam was a State
Finalist that year and went on to become captain of the Penn State
Wrestling team in 1959. He finished 5th in the nation at 147-pounds. Sam
went on to start a farm in Washington County that we still know today as
The SpringHouse! |

Section 2 (1A) Champions!
West Greene Girls Basketball |
With a win at Geibel on Thursday (2/2), West Greene Girls Basketball
clinched their first section title in 17 years! According to Twitter's @wgpioneers,
the only current player to have been born the last time the Pioneers won
a Section title (1999-2000) was Senior Marissa Rode! |

A standout wrestler for West Greene in 1968, Doug was a Section
Champion, a WPIAL Champion, and a Regional Champion at 133 pounds. He
was also a State Semifinalist. |

900th win
Waynesburg Wrestling |
With a hard fought, very exciting, 31-30 win over Connellsville, the
Waynesburg wresting program, recorded win #900! Waynesburg is only the
3rd program in the state to reach that milestone. As of that night, only
Canon-McMillan (1,065) and Easton (933) had recorded more victories. |

Coleman Scott

Off the heels of the 50th POWERade Tournament, we honor one of the
greats! Coleman was a 3-time POWERade Champion, but that was only the
beginning. He went on to win 3 PIAA State Titles, an NCAA National Title
at Oklahoma State and an Olympic Bronze medal at the 2012 London Games! |

Carolyn Huffman (McGrath)
Waynesburg Basketball |
Carolyn was a standout on the basketball court for the Raiders and was
their leading scorer in 1972. Her excellent play earned her a
scholarship to West Virginia University where she played 4 years for the
Lady Mountaineers. |

During a fall season where the football team didn't fare well, the other
fall sports at Waynesburg more than picked up the slack as the Raiders
picked up four Section Titles! Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Volleyball,
and Boys Cross Country all won their respective sections. |

Dan Morgan
Waynesburg Football |
Dan, a 1969 graduate of Waynesburg Central, received All-County &
All-Conference honors as an offensive lineman for the Raiders. He was
given a full scholarship to the University of Delaware and played guard
for the Division I Fighting Blue Hens. |

Waynesburg Girls Soccer |
The 2016 Lady Raiders seemed to make history all season long. They won
their first ever Section Title. They received a first round bye in the
playoffs. And they became the first Waynesburg Soccer team to ever reach
the WPIAL Semifinals! Unfortunately the season ended there with a 3-1
loss to Freeport. |

James Jones
Carmichaels Football |
James, Carmichaels Class of '92, starred on the Mikes football team as
Center and anchor of the offensive line. His efforts earned him a full
scholarship to the University of Tulsa. Upon his graduation, James was
the first Carmichaels football player in 22 years to receive a full
scholarship to a Division I school. |

4,000-yard Club
Greene County Football |
Friday night, Dylan Rush (Mapletown) became the 5th Greene County player
to rush for 4,000 career yards. He joined Derek Bochna (Mapletown '90) -
4,793; Rodney Wilson (West Greene '94) - 6,304; Rocky Doman (Carmichaels
'00) - 4,145; and Lanfer Simpson (Waynesburg '01) - 4,010. |

Jeff Culp
Jefferson-Morgan Football |
Referred to as a "One-man gang tackler," Jeff was a part of the
Jefferson-Morgan WPIAL Championship team, graduating in 1975. He was a
4-year letterman, was elected to the All Tri-County Team and the All
WPIAL Team. He also earned a Big 33 nomination and was named Dapper Dan
MVP. |

For the second week in a row, we recognize an undefeated football team
that did not get the opportunity to compete for a Championship due to
the Gardner Points System. The '66 Raiders were 8-0-1. Their 50th
anniversary was celebrated at halftime of last week's Waynesburg home
game. |

1969
Mapletown Football |
One of the best teams in Mapletown sports history, this 1969 team, never
got a chance to play for a championship. The team went undefeated but
based on the WPIAL School Classification System used at the time, the
Maples were deemed ineligible to compete in the postseason. |

Aaron Wilson
West Greene Football |
A 3-time All-Conference selection out of the Tri-County South, Aaron was
a "jack of all trades" for the Pioneers as the starting quarterback,
starting linebacker, the team kicker, punter and kick returner. Aaron
was a member of the West Greene Class of 2006. |

Lee Fritz

The first WPIAL player to rush for over 1,000 yards and pass for over
1,000 in the same season (2000), Lee led the Raiders to a 25-2 record as
the starting QB, never losing a regular season game. His Raiders made
back-to-back appearances in the WPIAL Championship Game, winning the
title in 1999. |

What a ride it was! The Pioneers won the first WPIAL Title in program
history and advanced all the way to the State Championship Game, losing
to Williams Valley in the bottom of the 7th, 3-2. The team finished with
an overall record of 26-2. |

Carmichaels Baseball |
Before this year, the last County team to reach the State Semifinals was
the 2008 Carmichaels baseball team. That team, led by the likes of Joby
Lapkowicz & Chuck Gasti, won the program's 3rd WPIAL title and went all
the way to the State Championship Game, where they lost to Camp Hill,
2-0. |

We don't look too far back for this historic moment! Jefferson-Morgan,
led by the senior battery of Maddie Ludrosky & Reagan Rush, and rallying
behind #TeamDugan, was inspirational in capturing the program's first
WPIAL Title. This historic team was truly unforgettable! |

Before the 2016 Section Champion Pioneers, the last West Greene softball
team to
win a Section Title was the 1983 team. That team won 18 games, a mark
that stood until last week when the Lady Pioneers defeated Bentworth for

Peyton Hampson

Peyton, Waynesburg Central Class on 2012, reached #6 on the All-Time
WPIAL Track & Field Top 25 with a mark of 2:11.17 in the 800 meter run.
Peyton went on to run track at West Virginia University. She was a
GreeneSports Athlete of the Week back on 3/19/12. |

Cary Kolat
Jefferson-Morgan Wrestling |
Stepping away from spring sports to honor one of the greats - Cary, a
4-time State Champion, graduated in 1992 undefeated at 137-0. He went on
to win back-to-back NCAA titles for Lock Haven in '96 & '97 and was an
Olympian as a member of the U.S. Men's Freestyle Wrestling Team from
1997-2001. |

Jocelyn, Waynesburg Central Class of 2002, had a best mark of 12' 6" in
pole vault which was good enough to rank her #3 at the time on the WPIAL

Rachel Rohanna

Currently in her first season on the LPGA Tour, Rachel was a 2-time
WPIAL Champion and a 2-time PIAA State Champion, winning both titles in
2007 and again in 2009! Rachel also played at Ohio State University and
was recently named to the WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2016. |

Doug was a 2-time State Champion in the 1-mile run, winning the title in
both 1965 and 1966. He set a State Record for the run in 1966 with a
remarkable time of 4:02! |

Nikki Gasti

Class of '99 |
The first Carmichaels athlete to have her number retired, Nikki was a
4-year starting pitcher, compiling a career record of 73-7. She was a
perfect 36-0 in Section Games. Nikki threw 15 no-hitters, 8 perfect
games, 51 shutouts, and finished with a career ERA of 0.23! A 2-time
WPIAL Champion, Nikki won a State Title in 1998 and was inducted into
the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. |
